Why the "Flyers"?

The nickname “Flyers” relates to the history of swimming at the University. In 1934, the basic components of the butterfly stroke were invented by University of Iowa swim coach David Armbruster and University of Iowa swimmer Jack Seig as a modified breaststroke technique. After several years of being used as a variant to the breaststroke, the Butterfly became accepted as its own style with separate rules in 1952. In tribute to the University of Iowa’s contribution to the history of swimming and the invention of the Butterfly stroke, Iowa Flyers was selected as the club name.

How Do I Become a "Flyer"?

Free trial period

Prospective Flyers participants are encouraged to attend an optional one-week free trial period to help make an informed decision about their potential participation in the club. During this period, prospective members will be evaluated by the Flyers coaching staff to determine the appropriate participation level for the swimmer.

Participation Requirements

The Iowa Flyers Swim Club is a competitive swimming organization. While the Flyers provide coaching and instruction to children and adults alike, the program is designed for swimmers who are interested in and prepared for competitive level swimming instruction. The club is not designed as a swim lesson program to teach individuals how to swim. For the safety and enjoyment of the club participants, each prospective member of the Flyers must be a minimum of 6 years of age, and must be able to complete without stopping 25 yards of freestyle and 25 yards of backstroke. A swim requirement test will be conducted by the Flyers coaching staff to determine if participation in the program can begin.

Registration

To register, stop by the Recreational Services Main Office in the Field House Room E216 between the hours of 8 am - 5pm Monday-Friday or call 319-384-1165 with questions. Participants are welcome to join at any point during the season.

Team Dues & Registration Fees

Team dues are paid monthly and are based on the group for which the participant is registered, as shown in the fee schedule below. (Team dues for September will be half price due to short month and free trial week). Each participant must also register for an annual USA Swimming/Iowa Swimming, Inc. athlete membership also listed in the fee schedule.
