Lifetime Leisure Skills Classes

Recreational Services offers outdoor education Touch the Earth (TTE) classes for credit. Each course is listed in the Lifetime Leisure Skills Department (410:000) and will receive one credit hour.

Registration takes place on ISIS.

410:058 Basic Self Defense
Course Fee $50

9:30 - 10:45 AM, Monday - Friday

This course is designed to introduce students to the practice of self-defense. It covers basic self-defense techniques including kicks and strikes from kick-boxing and joint manipulation from Hopkido. Topics include personal and property security.

This course/workshop is offered through the Center for Credit Programs (CCP). Admitted students may register on ISIS at or after their assigned registration time. 410:075 Basic Cross-Country Skiing
Course Fee: $195
 

Cross Country Skiing: Over the course of one weekend students taking this course will learn the fundamental skills needed to cross country ski. No previous skiing is necessary but is helpful. Group teaching will be the primary format with individual instruction provided as needed. Cross country skiing is a vigorous sport. Students should be physically fit enough to be on their feet for three to four hours. Students taking this course should be prepared for a variety of weather conditions including sub zero temperatures. Course location is dependent on snow conditions. The primary location is Telemark Lodge in Cable, Wisconsin. Telemark is approximately 400 miles north of Iowa City in North West Wisconsin. Following is a typical itinerary for the course:

Wednesday evening: Orientation, completion of waivers, discussion of clothing needed, fitting for equipment
Friday: Departure for ski area (departure by noon if possible)
Saturday: Morning session, group lesson covering fundamental skills, brief group tour of ski trails. Afternoon session: group lesson covering advanced skills, group tour of ski trails, small groups free to ski on their own
Sunday: Morning session, review of skills, group tour of ski trails, written test, course evaluation, departure for Iowa City (departure time varies on location and weather). Please note that this class is strenuous.

This course takes place in Telemark, WI. There is a required meeting prior to the start of class. The non-refundable fee includes: transportation, lodging, equipment and trail passes.

410:078 Ballroom Dancing II - Nightclub Series

8:00 - 9:15 PM, Monday - Friday

Course Description:
Ballroom Dance - Night Club Series includes the following dances: Salsa, Hustle, Night Club Two-Step, and Argentine Tango. Students will learn how to properly execute beginning figures in each dance, how to Lead and/or Follow, and proper etiquette involved in social dancing. Additionally, students will learn a brief history, the characteristics, and the musicality of each dance. Evaluation is pass/fail and based on attendance, participation, and a written final. 
New steps will be taught in every class so it is important to be on time and attend every class so that you do not fall behind.

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, students will have acquired the skills and knowledge to demonstrate the Lead and/or Follow, Basic figures (dance steps) in the Salsa, Hustle, Night Club Two-Step, and Argentine Tango, and pass the written exam.  As well, students will be knowledgeable about proper social dance etiquette.

Registration

Registration for all Lifetime Leisure Skilils (LTLS) classes takes place on ISIS, department (410:000). The fee for the class will be charged to your University of Iowa bill when the class actually meets. If you can not attend a class, you may drop the class on ISIS up to 11:59pm the day before the first class meeting. The fee will not be charged to your bill if you drop the class by this time. The fee is not refundable if you drop after this time.
