Wildlife Camps at Lakeside Labs

This summer, in addition to Wildlife Camps at Macbride Nature Recreation Area, the University of Iowa Division of Recreational Services and Friends of Lakeside Lab will offer a day camp for students who have completed 2nd through 6th grades who live in the Okoboji area or will be there during the summer.

Lakeside Lab is a field campus that is run jointly by The University of Iowa, Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa through the State Board of Regents. It is 140-acres on the west shore of West Okoboji Lake.

2008 Camp Details

General Information: This summer, the University of Iowa Division of Recreational Services, Iowa Lakeside Lab and Friends of Lakeside Lab will sponsor Wildlife Camps for children who have completed 2nd - 6th grades. Campers can be dropped off at Lakeside Lab or at one of our three drop-off sites in Spirit Lake, Milford or Spencer. Campers will need to bring a lunch and water bottle. The professional staff to student ratio will be no greater than 1:8.
Camp Information:

Eagle Camp (August 4 - 8)
Special emphasis will be given to wetlands and outdoor recreation activities: marsh and slough explorations, canoeing, fishing, lake studies, bird-banding, Bald Eagle natural history, swimming, Silver Lake Fen field trip, outdoor camping and cooking, journaling and "art in nature" activities.

Hawk Camp (August 11 - 15)
Special emphasis will be given to woodland and prairie activities: Forest exploration, prairie exploration, Red-tailed hawk natural history, wilderness survival and shelter building, lake studies, canoeing, swimming, Cayler Prairie and Freda Hafner Kettlehole field trip, bird-banding, and birding.

* Students may register for both weeks of camp

Ages:

Students who have completed 2nd - 6th grades (Spring of 2008)

Dates:

Week 1: August 4 - 8, 2008 (Eagle Camp)

Week 2: August 11 - 15, 2008 (Hawk Camp)

Time:

This is a day camp and will run from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday

Location:

Lakeside Lab, located on West Lake Okoboji and selected field sites.

Camp Fee:

The camp fee is $180 per week. The fee includes transportation, supervision, materials for activities and a camp t-shirt. A $50 non-refundable deposit is included in the camp fee and due at the time of registration.

Pick-Up / Drop-off:

Spirit Lake Middle School, Spencer, Milford and Lakeside Lab will all have pick-up and drop-off sites. Site details will be included in the camp confirmation letter. Students will be transported by bus or van to Lakeside Lab and selected field sites.

Registration Information:

Registration forms must be sent via US mail and postmarked May 5, 2008 or after.
