Aquatics  
 

1. Does Recreational Services offer a Lifeguard Course?

Recreational Services does offer a lifeguard course, usually held in the spring. Information on any aquatics course can be found by clicking here.

 

2. What are the pool hours?

The pool is open from the beginning of Fall classes to the end of the summer session. It is closed for home swim meets, home football games, and other events as listed. Click here for pool hours and closures.

 

3. Is towel service available at the facility?

Recreational Services has a Pro Shop that sells a variety of items, including a locker towel. The Pro Shop is located in E216 Field House from 8 am – 5 pm and in the Information Booth outside office hours.

 

4. What is the Masters Swim Team and who can participate?

Masters is a semi-competitive program for students, faculty, staff, and community members (19 & older) who are capable of swimming for 20 minutes continuously at any level. More information on practice times and fees can be found here.

Fitness & Wellness

 

1. What does the Fitness Pass include?

The Fitness Pass allows unlimited access to any of the four UI fitness centers: the Fitness Loft (located in the Field House), Fitness East (located in Halsey Hall across the street from the Iowa Memorial Union), Fitness West (located in the new Hawkeye Tennis & Recreation Complex) and the Weight Room at the Recreation Building.

 

2. What is the difference between the Ultimate Pass and the Fitness Pass?

In addition to access to the four fitness centers, the Ultimate Pass allows unlimited access to Aerobics and Cycling classes, the Field House Swimming Pool and Racquetball Courts.

 

3. Where can I purchase a Fitness, Aerobics or Ultimate Pass?

All passes are sold at the Field House (E216 - Main Office during business hours and the Information Booth after 5 pm weekdays and on weekends), Fitness East and the Hawkeye Tennis & Recreation Complex. Cash, Check and UI Charge are all accepted. Please bring a valid UI ID in order to receive a UI student or UI faculty/staff discount.

 

4. Can I charge a pass to my U-bill?

You can purchase your pass with cash, check, or by charging it to your U-Bill. No matter which method you choose, please remember to bring in your Student ID so you can receive the student rate.

 

5. Does my spouse get a special rate?

Recreational Services offers cards/passes to spouses/partners of University students, faculty, and staff at the same rate paid by the UI student, faculty or staff member. You and your spouse and/or registered partner will need to stop in the main office of the Field House, E216 Field House, between 8 am and 5 pm, Monday-Friday. If you are registering a fitness pass for a partnership, the partnership must be registered with the University of Iowa. Forms to register a partnership can be picked up in our main office. You will need to bring in your marriage certificate and you University ID. Your spouse will need to bring in a driver’s license.   6. Are instructors certified to teach the class?

Professional Certification is preferred, though; we do provide in-house certifications for those with prior experience.

 

7. How do I become a fitness instructor?

Recreational Services is always looking for motivated individuals to teach aerobics, cycling, and wellness classes. Contact the Fitness and Wellness Director for more information.

 

8. Do you offer yoga classes? If so, where are they held and what is the cost?

Yes, we do offer yoga classes, in numerous locations both on the east and west side of campus. Our wellness classes can be found online by clicking here. The prices are listed by sessions. You can choose to pay for an entire session or per class. The walk-in fee is $9 per class.

  9. How do I learn to use the equipment?

Fitness Orientations are available at all four fitness facilities (Fitness Loft, Fitness East, Fitness West, and The Recreation Building). All fitness orientations are by appointment. Please see the appropriate front desk for more information.

  10. How do I arrange to have someone come to our residence hall or group to discuss fitness issues?

General

1. Who can work out here?

Recreational Services has an open door policy. This means that anybody can enter the UI Field House or UI Recreation Building, including the Iowa City and surrounding communities. Once inside, the activity that a person chooses to do will determine if there is a fee involved. Many activities are free of charge including playing basketball or volleyball and walking on the track in either the Field House or the Recreation Building. The fees for other activities vary.

 

2. When do passes go on sale?

Fall semester passes go on sale two weeks prior to the start of classes. Spring and Summer semester passes go on sale one week prior to the start of classes. All passes expire the day before the next term begins. For example, the Fall Fitness Pass expires January 16 and spring classes begin January 17.

 

3. How can I rent a basketball, volleyball or racquetball racquet?

To check out a basketball, volleyball, racquet or other piece of equipment, you must be 18 years of age with a picture ID. Bring your ID to either E216 Field House or the Information Booth in the Field House. Some rental charges will apply. All equipment must be returned by the end of the day or a replacement fee will be assessed.

 

4. How do I rent a racquetball court?

Day of Play - To reserve a racquetball/squash/wallyball court a person can call 335-9293 or stop into E216 Field House or the Information Booth to reserve a court for that day.

Advanced Reservations - Reservations can be made for one week in advance starting each Thursday. All advanced reservations MUST be done in person in either E216 Field House during business hours or at the Information Booth after hours.

 

5. Does Recreational Services offer youth sport camps?

No, UI Sport Camps are run by the Athletic Department. However, the Sport Camp office is located in the Field House. More on Sports Camps...

 

6. How do I find out if my outdoor event has been canceled due to weather?

Call the info line at 353-3000.

 

7. Is there a lost and found?

Each facility maintains a lost and found. Check at the main counter/office for your missing items.

 

8. Where are each of the facilities locacted?

9. Can I bring a guest?

Yes, participants can bring a guest to Recreational Services facilities. All of the facilities are open to the public but there may be a fee for certain activities. Click here for a complete list of fees.

 

10. How can I get a job working for Recreational Services?

Some openings are posted on the website here. You can also complete an application, available on the website, and return it to the main office, E216 Field House.

Intramurals
 

1. Who is eligible for Intramurals?

Only University of Iowa students, faculty and staff members are eligible for competition in the Intramural Program. Spouses of University of Iowa students, faculty and staff are eligible for competition in the Co-Rec and Open Divisions.

  2. Do I need to form my own Intramural team?

It is best if you form your own team. This is a great way to meet people in your residence halls, student groups or academic classes. However, Recreational Services does maintain a free agent list if you need assistance.

 

3. Can I play on more than one team per sport?

A player may play on only one team in the Women’s/Men’s division and only one team in the Co-Rec division during the season.

 

4. Can I register for Intramurals online or by phone?

Registration for all Intramural Events takes place in E216 Field House unless otherwise noted. Registration forms are available at least two weeks prior to the event deadline both online and outside of E216 Field House.      

 

5. What are the requirements to register for team intramural sports?

All Intramural teams will be required to complete a Team Roster form in order to register for an event. Team Roster forms will require the printed name, student ID number, and signature of all players on the team. Team registrations will not be accepted without a completed team roster form. Specific team roster requirements for each sport will be listed on the entry form. Sign up for all intramural sports, besides golf, takes place in the Recreational Services Office, E216 Field House.

 

6. Do I need to bring my ID to Intramural games?

YES! Intramural regulations require all participants to bring their ID in order to participate in intramural sports. Anyone who does not produce a picture ID will not be allowed to participate. NO ID = NO PLAY. NO EXCEPTIONS.

 

7. What is the instant scheduling process? Which sports are instantly scheduled?

Instant scheduling is a process that allows teams to choose the night and time they will play their regular season games. The instant scheduling process is used for Flag Football, Volleyball, and Basketball (Spring Semester).

 

8. What is the Intramural Championship Point System?

Points are awarded to each team that participates in intramural sports. Teams are awarded points based upon their finish in a sport with a minimum number of points guaranteed to each participating team. In order to accumulate Intramural Championship points, teams must keep the same team name throughout the year.

 

9. What happens if I forfeit a game?

Any team that forfeits one of its scheduled games will automatically be dropped from the remainder of the schedule. They may apply for reinstatement by paying a forfeit fee within 48 hours of the forfeited contest. The forfeit fee will be refunded if the team completes its schedule, but will be lost if it forfeits a second time. The forfeit fee is half of the original sign-up fee.

 

10. Is there any way to avoid a forfeit if I know I won’t have enough people to play?

Yes you can avoid the forfeit fees. To do so you must fill out a default form 3:00 PM of the day of the game on weekdays or at least 4 hours prior to a scheduled game time on Saturday and Sunday.

 

11. How can I add a team member to my roster?

The manager of the team needs to fill out a roster addition form and bring it to E216 Field House. The necessary form as well as the exact policy are listed online and can be accessed by clicking here. These forms must be brought into the main office 24 hours in advance of the team’s next game. They must be brought in between 8 am and 5 pm, Monday-Friday. For Sunday night games, add forms must be brought in by 5 pm on Friday.

 

12. Are intercollegiate athletes and coaches eligible to participate in intramurals?

Yes, intercollegiate athletes and coaches are allowed to participate in intramurals, but not in a sport similar to what they compete or coach in as a varsity athlete or coach. You can find more information on the particular sports in the Intramural Regulations by clicking here.

 

13. Are sports club members and coaches eligible to participate in intramurals?

Yes, sports club members and coaches are allowed to participate in intramurals. Only one sports club member OR coach may participate on a team in the sport similar to what they participate in through sports clubs. 14. Is there a limit to the number of players I can have on my roster?

Yes, there are limits to the number of players listed on a roster. The limits for each sport can be found online, here, or outside of E216 Field House (on the sport’s roster form).

 

15. How do I make changes to my roster?           

You can make changes to your roster through addition and drop forms. These forms can be found outside of E216 Field House.

Sport Clubs

1. What is a sports club?

A sports club is a group of individuals organized for the purpose of furthering their interest in a common sport or recreational activity.

 

2. How does a sports club gain recognition?

To be recognized as a sports club by Recreational Services, a club must first be recognized as a student organization by the Student Activities Board, located in the Iowa Memorial Union.

 

3. What is the skill level?

Sport clubs are designed to accept members at any and all skill levels and to provide recreational fun and/or competition, depending on the desires of the members.

 

4. Who can participate?

Everyone is welcome to participate in sports clubs. However, to be sponsored by the University, the majority of each team must be comprised of UI students.

 

6. Does it cost anything to join a sports club?

Most clubs do have club dues. Specific club information is listed on their individual pages, which can be found on the sports club page.

 

5. Are there try-outs to join?

A few clubs hold try-outs to select their members. Specific club information is listed on their individual pages, which can be found on the sports club page.

Touch The Earth

 

1. What is the Touch The Earth (TTE) Program?

Touch The Earth is the outdoor program at the University of Iowa. It encompasses the Lifetime Leisure Skills classes (Department 410:000) for credit, the Climbing Gym located in the Field House, the High Adventure Challenge Course, the Adventure Trip & Clinic program, and the Outdoor Rental Center.


 

2. Can I get into a class if it is full?

No, size limits are enforced for liability and teaching purposes. However, we recommend checking ISIS frequently because some spaces become available for a very short period of time. If you still are not able to register for the class, attend the first session. In the chance there is any available spaces during the first class, the instructor will sign an add slip for you.

 

3. Do I need to be a student to participate in credit courses?

Yes if you are not currently enrolled in the University of Iowa, you must register in order to participate in any credit courses (credit courses are listed here). In addition to registration fees, all enrolled students must pay the lab fee for the course.

 

4. Do you have to be trained to use the Climbing Gym?

Everyone using the Climbing Gym will be required to pass a SAFETY CHECK or a SAFETY CHECK RE-CERTIFICATION.  You can click here to access the climbing gym’s website and the information needed to use the climbing gym.

 

5. Who can rent from the Outdoor Rental Center?

Everyone can rent from the Outdoor Rental Center. The only requirement for the outside public is a check or credit card deposit for any rented items.

 

6. How much snow is needed in order for the Outdoor Rental Center to be open longer?

For extended hours, snow accumulation IN IOWA CITY must be approximately 4”. However, to verify the hours, please call the Outdoor Rental Center at 319-384-1225.

 

7. What types of classes and trips are offered by the Touch the Earth program?

8. How can I participate in the Challenge Course?

The only way to participate, as an individual, in the Challenge Course is to register for the Team Building Course, listed with our other classes. Wildlife Camps

1. How do I register my child for summer wildlife camp?

These camps fill quickly so in order to make it fair to everyone, we require all registration to take place by U.S. Postal Mail. All summer wildlife camp registrations must be mailed to:

Please pay close attention to the postmark date on the registration form and DO NOT mail it in before this date. Walk-ins are not accepted.

 

2. How old does my child need to be in order to attend summer camp?

Students currently in 1st grade through 7th grade are eligible to register for wildlife camps(Coyote, Chickadee and all Summer Camps). For summer camps, each camp is designed for different age groups. Read the registration brochure to pick the camp that is appropriate for your child.
