Frequently Asked Questions:

1. Is it true there will be a new recreation facility on the East side of the Iowa River?

Yes, on September 27, 2006, the state Board of Regents approved the financial plan for the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center (CRWC).

2. What will be included in the new facility?

The goals for the CRWC are to prelace the outdated Field House pool and to increase the square footage of the fitness space offered by the University. The CRWC will include a 50-meter competitive swimming pool, separate diving well, a leisure pool with lanes for lap swimming, and 24,000 square feet of fitness space which will be used for a variety of cardio-vascular machines as well as weight equipment. To put this space in perspective, the Fitness Loft and Fitness East are each 6,000 square feet. In addition to the pools and fitness area, the facility will also have a jogging track, climbing wall and 3 multi-purpose courts.

3. Where will the facility be located?

The CRWC will be located on the southwest corner of Burlington and Madison streets, where the University Police Department was located.

4. When will the building open?

Recreational Services is currently working out the final details with RDG Planning and Design of Des Moines, Iowa; the design firm selected for the project. Construction is scheduled to begin Fall of 2007 with an estimated completion date of Late Fall 2009.

5. Will I still have to buy a Fitness Pass to use the new facility?

No. Once the CRWC is open, UI students will automatically become members of Recreational Services, paying a membership fee through their student fee. Instead of having to buy a seperate Fitness, Swim, and Racquetball Pass, these activities will all be included with the membership fee. Memberships will also be available to UI Faculty and Staff as well as community members.

6. What will happen to the Field House?

The Field House will be renovated slightly in order to become a single point of control facility. This means all participants will enter through one main entrance and have to check-in at a membership desk. In addition, the swimming pool will be decommissioned and assigned for another use still to be determined.
